How to Roller Skate

Roller skating is a fun activity that you can enjoy with your family or friends. Before you get on the rink, you need to understand the steps of skating so that you decrease the risk of injury.

First, find a pair of skates that fit your feet. They shouldn’t be too loose because your feet will start to slide around in them. If they are too tight, then they might begin to cut off the circulation to the feet.

Next, you want to find the right style of skates! There are some that have four wheels in a line, and some with two wheels at the front of the skate and two at the back. The wheels are located on the bottom of the shoe with a small brake at the front or at the back so that you can stop within in a few seconds.

Aside from the skates you will need: kneepads, a helmet, and pads for the elbows. Once you begin to feel comfortable you can start to take off this safety equipment; however, it’s best to skate with safety equipment at all times to prevent scrapes and injuries.

Now you’re ready to get in the rink!

Your feet should be shoulder-width apart while skating. Bend the knees slightly, and squat down. When you’re skating, you want to have balance so that you don’t fall over. Next, you will move your feed back and forth. Some would compare skating to walking like a duck as you want to move one foot out from the other, similar to a waddle. The skates will feel awkward at first, but once you learn how to move the feet back and forth and maintain the proper body placement, skating can be fun!

Once you have mastered the basics you will soon be gliding and even skating backwards!
